Whittling for Wellbeing is a unique programme that uses the simple craft of carving to improve children’s mental health, resilience, and confidence. Delivered in schools, forest school sites, and community settings, the sessions blend outdoor learning, mindfulness, and hands-on creativity.
Whittling for Wellbeing
Why Whittling?
Carving engages children in a calming, rhythmic activity that reduces stress and encourages focus. Working with natural materials helps children feel grounded and connected to the world around them, while creating something tangible builds pride and self-esteem.

Testimonials
"The session was transformative for our group with additional needs. We watched as children who typically struggle with focus and engagement became completely absorbed in the craft, and the natural outdoor setting created a calm, inclusive space where they could learn at their own pace. The skilled facilitators understood exactly how to support each child's individual needs, and we've seen improvements in confidence, fine motor skills, and emotional regulation. We’d welcome more of these funded sessions!”
— Sarah Harding, SENDCo
“Alex is a fantastic workshop leader - knowledgeable, approachable and gentle in his manner and approach. He has a gift for intuition and ensuring all participants are included and feel at ease, and building a calm and focused atmosphere in the space. Every carving workshop at RAMM has been a big success with positive feedback - so thank you Alex!”
