Carving Wellbeing, Restoring Nature
Woodcrafters was created to harness the power of traditional craft & nature connection to improve wellbeing, strengthen communities, & restore our relationship with the natural world. What began as small, local sessions has grown into a social enterprise delivering programmes for children, adults, & organisations across Devon & the UK.
Our Journey:
From local wellbeing workshops to a growing social movement
Initially contracted by the NHS to deliver Woodcraft for Wellbeing sessions through social prescribing, it quickly became clear that there was an urgent need for accessible, nature-based therapeutic activities. Our programmes have since shown how simple tools and shared craft can address key social challenges — from nature deficit disorder and social isolation to mental health and addiction — while building resilience, belonging, and deeper connection with the natural world.
Our Founder
Woodcrafters was founded by Alex Finberg, an award-winning woodcarver and author of Spoon Carving: From Log to Spoon. With over a decade of experience in mental health, education, and community work, Alex continues to guide the organisation’s vision while championing craft-for-wellbeing nationally.
A national ambition
Our story is still unfolding. We believe that craft and nature must play a central role in the future of wellbeing and education. By training facilitators, publishing evidence, and scaling delivery, Woodcrafters is carving out a national movement where people and nature thrive side by side.
