Training Structure

Woodcrafters Teacher Training is a professional, practice-based course designed to help you teach full-day and two-day woodcraft workshops safely, inclusively and to a high standard.

Through a blend of online learning, hands-on training and a mentored workshop in your own setting, you will gain the skills and confidence to take a group from a round log to a finished spoon or bowl.

  • Online Modules — nine self-paced modules with video tutorials, a Workbook and practical tasks, each producing a piece of your own Course Pack of plans, risk assessments and costings.

  • In-Person Training (3 days) — immersive practical training at Ambios combining advanced sharpening, carving, teaching and reflective learning, with your own teaching observed.

  • Mentored Workshop — back in your own setting, you run a full one-day workshop from your Course Pack and debrief it online with Alex.

  • Ongoing CPD Opportunities — Woodcrafters participants are invited to continue their learning through optional CPD workshops, online modules and community gatherings.

  • Access to Woodcrafters Membership: includes a host of benefits, from tool discounts to the online business and marketing school and the grant funding academy.

What the Training Covers

  • Sharpening & Tool Care in Depth: re-profiling and repairing edges; sharpening hook knives, gouges, adzes and axes; maintaining a group set; and teaching participants to sharpen their own tools.

  • How People Learn a Hand Skill: breaking a skill into steps, demonstrating so a beginner can copy you, and giving feedback without taking the knife away.

  • Teaching the Axe, Adze & Gouge: tool talks, mixed-tool layouts, and teaching splitting, hewing and hollowing safely.

  • Session Planning & Risk Assessing: planning and risk assessing full-day and two-day workshops, with emergency action plans (covered in the online training).

  • Running 1 & 2 Day Workshops: pacing a long day, keeping fast and slow carvers together, working with a helper, and the arc of Log to Spoon and Log to Bowl.

  • Projects for Every Ability & Skill Sharing: project ladders from butter spreader to bowl, extension tasks, adaptations, and structuring peer teaching.

  • Programme Design: planning a series or a term for schools and Forest School groups, so that skills build week on week.

  • Wood, Venues & Pricing: sourcing wood for longer courses, hosting a residential, and costing and pricing a two-day course (covered in the online training).

  • Professional Teaching Standards: the Woodcrafters Teaching Standard, with observed teaching at the residential and a mentored workshop of your own.

  • "I feel loads more confident in moving towards holding my own sessions. I have got lots of ideas of projects and things i can do in a session. Im raring to go but im just at the start of my journey" - JC Woodcrafters Trainee

  • "I feel so content and confident. I will walk into my sessions with a head held high now. I feel i can see how i will progress and feel the insecurity i suffered from is aleviated. Ive learned to value what i do and also feel i have a network for future support . Ive had so much fun. And learnt so much . I feel inspired and mellow" - RF

  • "I enjoyed being part of a community deeply committed to harnessing woodcraft as a tool to promote and create wellbeing, in support of mental health. I was able to see where my own practice needs to grow and what I've already managed to establish on my own, plus I met a lot of beautiful and like-minded humans with whom I also share lots of insecurities of doubts as facilitators, woodcrafters and humans in society in general." —RG Woodcrafters Trainee

  • "Inspired to strip back my chaotic approach to sessions I deliver and use carving as the focus and theme. Build my confidence in starting with woodcraft and begin to implement wellbeing. My self doubt has been challenged this weekend but the support and kindness within the community has been invaluable. It has helped with bringing confidence back into my future carving self. Honest and open reflective moments were very good and well supported/facilitated." - KT Woodcrafters Trainee
