Pricing & Income for Creatives - Thursday 14th January 2027
PRICING AND INCOME FOR CREATIVES
Set prices that pay for your time, and build income from more than one place, in one session.
Led by Alex Finberg, maker, published author and founder of Woodcrafters CIC.
Day and date: Thursday 14th January 2027
09:30 – 12:30 UK time
Price: £35 (subsidised by grant funds from School of Social Entrepreneurs)
LIVE online & recorded (recordings sent out after the workshop to all who book on)
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Most creatives price from the cost of materials plus a bit, or from what the next maker charges. Very few have ever worked out what an hour of their time actually earns, and when they do, the answer is often well below a living wage.
This workshop takes a different route. In two and a half hours you will work out what your time is really worth, set prices you can stand behind, look at where your money comes from, and set up a monthly routine that keeps your prices and your cash on track. It all goes into a Pricing and Income Plan on a Page, which you can refer to again and again
The course is practical from start to finish. Each part teaches one idea, shows real examples from a potter and an illustrator, and then gives you time to apply it to your own work.
Can't make it live? The full recording is shared with everyone who books.
WHAT WE COVER
1. Where you are now
What a good price covers, and a quick health check of your creative business, so you know where to focus first.
2. What your time is really worth
Your Enough Income, your money picture for the last 12 months, and your Maker's Rate: the real hourly rate your prices have to earn.
3. A price you can stand behind
The floor price for a piece or a session, where your price can sit, retail and wholesale prices, saying your price plainly, and when to stop making something.
4. More than one way to earn
Your Income Wheel, the kinds of income stream open to creatives, the difference between a new stream and a new route, and a simple test for choosing your next stream.
5. Your money routine and your numbers
A monthly money hour, a cash calendar for the quiet months, a buffer for the month that goes wrong, and five numbers worth checking.
6. Making it happen: price rises, more sales, paid on time
When and how to raise your prices and tell customers, ways to sell more without discounting, getting paid on time, and a quarterly pricing review.
7. Bringing it together
Where money meets the law (tax, VAT, records, showing prices, commissions, insurance) and who to ask, plus your first steps for the week after.
WHAT YOU LEAVE WITH
• A completed Pricing and Income Plan on a Page
• Your Maker's Rate, the real hourly rate your prices have to earn
• Floor, retail and wholesale prices for your main product or session
• Your Income Wheel, and one next income stream checked for fit
• A monthly money hour, a 12-month cash calendar and a buffer target
• A plan for your next price rise, with dates in your diary
WHAT YOU GET
• The live workshop, with time for questions
• The full recording, to watch again or catch up
• The workbook (PDF), where you write your plan as we go
• The training manual (PDF), an easy-read guide to every key idea, to keep and come back to
• The Pricing and Income Sheet, a spreadsheet that works out your rates, floor prices, income mix and cash calendar, with worked examples
WHO IT'S FOR
• Potters, illustrators, textile artists, jewellers, photographers, woodworkers, printmakers, musicians who teach, and any other creative who wants to earn from their work
• People selling products, running classes, or taking commissions
• Anyone who finds pricing uncomfortable, or suspects they are charging too little
• Beginners and people who have been selling for years: no prior knowledge needed
You do not need to be good with numbers. The spreadsheet does the sums, and rough figures are fine.
ABOUT ALEX FINBERG

PRACTICAL DETAILS
• Format: Online via Google Meet, link sent on booking
• Recording: Full recording shared with everyone who books

QUESTIONS
Is this only for craftspeople?
No. The sums are the same whatever you make or teach, and the examples are chosen to work for any creative, including people who sell lessons or sessions rather than products.
Will you give me tax or accounting advice?
No. We teach you to run your creative work as a business. We do not give tax, legal or financial advice. We show you where money meets the law and who to ask, such as HMRC or an accountant.
Do I need my accounts to hand?
Rough figures for your last 12 months are enough: what came in, what went out, and the hours you work. Estimates are fine, and nobody else sees them.
What if I can't attend live?
Book anyway. You will receive the recording and all the resources, and you can work through the plan in your own time.
Is there any homework?
Allow about 30 minutes after the session to finish your plan. After that, the work is one money hour a month and a short pricing review each quarter.
