COURSE DESCRIPTION

Carving a spoon and teaching eight total beginners spooncarving are two entirely different skills. The fundamentals of becoming a good teacher are grounded in good preparation, and in a set of competencies which can be learned online before being put into practice.

Led by Alex Finberg, author of Spooncarving: From Log to Spoon and founder of Woodcrafters, this course gives you the planning, the habits and the paperwork that make a knife-based session safe and inspiring to be part of. It is taught in short videos you can watch whenever suits you. Every module equips you with practical templates you can adapt and use in your own settings. By the end you will have a complete, ready-to-run pack for your next workshop.

THIS COURSE IS FOR YOU IF...

You already carve with straight and hook knives, and you want to teach it well. It suits:

  • Spoon carvers and green woodworkers starting to teach

  • Woodcraft and bushcraft tutors

  • Forest School and outdoor learning practitioners. This is the next logical step for Forest School Leaders who have completed their Level 3 training.

  • Teachers who run woodcraft in schools

  • Youth workers and group leaders

  • Craftspeople asked to run sessions at festivals, venues and events

You do not need a teaching qualification. You do need to be able to carve competently already, because the course teaches you how to teach carving, not how to carve.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Across eight modules you will cover:

  • Starting out: where you stand as a teacher, and choosing your audience, format, venue and first project

  • Planning your sessions: risk-benefit assessment, an emergency action plan, session plans for two hours or a full day, and the insurance, background checks and safeguarding you need

  • Tools, kit and wood: equipping and costing a group kit, protective equipment, and sourcing green wood responsibly

  • Tool care and sharpening: keeping a whole group set sharp to the #staysharp Standard, with a care routine and tool log

  • Safety in practice: the tool talk, room layout and ratios, and what to do if someone is cut

  • Teaching and demonstrating: demonstrating so beginners can copy you, teaching grain, correcting common faults, and adapting for children and different groups

  • Running your sessions: the session day itself, briefing a helper, and running a pilot session of your own

  • The business and your development: costing and pricing, booking terms, feedback, and planning your next steps as a teacher

Knives come first, and the axe and saw are covered for safe use and safe technique.

HOW IT WORKS

Each module has two or three short narrated videos, each no longer than ten minutes, with captions and transcripts. Alongside the videos come a Workbook chapter, a short self-marked knowledge check and a practical task. Each task is a template you complete for your own workshop. Together the templates build into My Workshop Pack: your session plan, risk-benefit assessment, kit list, tool log, tool talk card, cut protocol, costing sheet and more.

There are no live sessions and nothing to submit. You work through the course in your own time, and check your work against clear checklists as you go.

WHAT IS INCLUDED

  • Eight modules of narrated video teaching, captioned and transcribed

  • The course Workbook

  • Every template in My Workshop Pack, in editable form, each with a filled-in example

  • Eight knowledge checks, with unlimited retakes

  • Your Woodcrafters Certificate of Completion

TEACHING ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD

Rules on carrying knives, background checks, insurance and data protection differ from country to country. The course teaches each topic as a principle that holds anywhere. It then gives you a checklist for finding out the rules where you live, with worked examples from the UK, Europe and the USA. This is general guidance rather than legal advice.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Do I need carving experience?
Yes. This course is about learning to teach carving, so you should already be confident carving with straight and hook knives.

Are there any live sessions or in-person days?
No. The course is fully online and self-paced, so you can start when you are ready and work around your own teaching.

Do I get a certificate?
Yes. You receive a Woodcrafters Certificate of Completion once you have passed all eight knowledge checks, and returned the short feedback form. The certificate records that you completed the course. It is not a licence to teach, and the course is not currently accredited.

Can I take it if I teach outside the UK?
Yes. The course is written for people teaching anywhere in the world.

Can I book places for my team or organisation?
Yes. Please write to info@woodcrafters.uk and we will set it up with you.
