Woodcrafters Teacher Training (Level 2) - 06.07.27 - 8.07.27
Dates: Tuesday 6th to Thursday 8th September 2027 (9am to 4pm)
Residential: All Meals & Accommodation Included
Venue: Ambios, Lower Sharpham Barton Farm, Ashprington TQ9 7DX
Trainer: Led by Alex Finberg
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Over three immersive days at the beautiful Ambios, on the banks of the River Dart, you will take your woodcraft teaching from the two-hour session to the full-day workshop and the two-day course, where the tools are heavier, the projects longer, and a group has to be held from the first cup of tea to the last shavings swept from the floor.
Led by Alex Finberg, author of Spooncarving: From Log to Spoon and founder of Woodcrafters, this practical, hands-on training is for people who already teach woodcraft and want to do so to a professional standard, with plans that hold up over a long day, projects for every ability in the room, and the confidence to take a group from a round log to a finished spoon or bowl.
The course includes a self-paced online course of nine modules, which you can begin as soon as you book, and a mentored one-day workshop in your own setting afterwards.
THIS COURSE IS FOR YOU IF...
You are a Forest School leader, woodcraft tutor, outdoor or bushcraft instructor, teacher or craftsperson who already teaches knife-based woodcraft, and you want to upskill, broaden what you offer, and teach to a professional standard.
This is a Level 2 course. You should have completed Teaching Woodcraft Skills (Level 1) or already teach knife-based woodcraft, and be confident carving a spoon from a split log with axe, straight knife and hook knife.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Across three full days and the online course you will cover:
Sharpening and tool care in depth: re-profiling and repairing edges, sharpening hook knives, gouges, adzes and axes, and keeping a group set in good order
How people learn a hand skill, and how to demonstrate and give feedback so that a beginner can follow you
How to teach the axe, adze and gouge safely, including laying out a space where all three are in use
How to plan and risk assess full-day and two-day workshops such as Log to Spoon and Log to Bowl
Projects for every ability, extension tasks for quick carvers, and skill sharing between participants
How to run a long day: pacing, keeping fast and slow carvers together, and working with a helper
How to source wood for longer courses, host a residential and price a two-day course
You will leave with a complete Course Pack of plans, risk assessments and costings for a one-day workshop and a two-day course of your own, and the confidence to run them. And, as with all our CPD, you will have spent three days carving, sharing stories and learning in good company.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
This is a fully residential, fully catered experience. Your course fee covers:
3 full days of hands-on training
2 nights' single room accommodation on site
Locally sourced, organic breakfast, lunch and dinner each day (the food really is amazing!)
Full access to the self-paced online course, with nine modules, video tutorials and a Workbook
An observed teaching session, with feedback against the Woodcrafters Teaching Standard
An online debrief with Alex after your mentored one-day workshop
Your Woodcrafters Certificate of Completion
If you are local and prefer to travel in each day, a commuter option is available, though we would encourage you to stay. The site is beautiful, the food is exceptional, and the conversations over dinner by the River Dart are well worth staying for.
NEXT STEPS: FACILITATOR TRAINING
Teacher Training leads naturally on to our flagship Facilitator Training (Level 3), which teaches you to deliver woodcraft for wellbeing sessions: how to support groups from diverse backgrounds to access woodcraft, how to create a safe and supportive environment for vulnerable adults and children with varying support needs, and how to run woodcraft for wellbeing sessions as a social prescribing service.
Facilitator Training is CPD-certified by The CPD Certification Service for 19 CPD hours, and completing it gives you the option to join our growing network of woodcraft for wellbeing practitioners.
Facilitator Training runs from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th September 2027, in the same week as Teacher Training, and some participants choose to stay for both, with a rest day on the Thursday in between. Get in touch and we will help you arrange the extra nights at Ambios.
